garden suite

These pieces are among my favourites, but are too subtle in their finished form to command much attention. Garden suite began as a series of soft focused polaroids taken from looking out from a lilac bush that I used to hide under as a child. In the process of making them, i remembered why I was hiding: an older boy was abusing me. I scanned the images into the computer, and blurred them before outputting them as inkjet prints which were then transferred to watercolour paper with water. Over the transfers, i layered black and/or white children's tempera paint, trying to blot out the image. The dyes, however, kept bleeding through the paint, leaving a stain that could not really be eradicated, much like the effects of childhood trauma. Each image is 11" x 14".
